Top 10 things to do this summer in the Lake District

21 June 2022

We believe there's never a wrong time to visit the Lake District; it's the kind of place that gets more beautiful throughout the year. However, it's a truly great place to be during the summer months when the sun is shining and you can make the most of everything we have to offer!

With that in mind, here are the top ten things to do this summer in the Lake District.

1. Go paddleboarding

Looking to brighten up your holiday with a little adventure? We’ve partnered up with 'Paddleboard The Lakes' for the 2022 season, meaning you can now hop aboard your very own paddleboard from our marina. With prices starting from just £25pp for two hours, this is the perfect activity for the whole family - including any four-legged friends you might have brought along.

2. Take a dip

There’s nothing more relaxing than taking a dip in one of the area's crystal-clear lakes. There are plenty of wild swimming spots for you to choose from, where you know you will be safe while splashing around.

3. Head to our luxury Lake District spa

The summer season is all about making you feel good - so where better to spend your time than at our 'swanderful' spa? Whether you want to kick back in the jacuzzi pool or treat yourself to a massage, we’ve got you covered. If a glass of fizz, DJ tunes and a party atmosphere is more your jam, then get in touch to ask about our Spa Parties!

4. Head out on a hike

Hiking is another great way to bring some adventure into your holiday, and there are plenty of Lake District walks for you to try out, depending on your experience (and enthusiasm). If you’re daring, you might want to try your hand at climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

5. Treat yourself to an afternoon tea

After a busy morning of exploring, our delicious afternoon tea is sure to give you the burst of energy you need! This summer, treat your tastebuds to tea, cake, sandwiches and if you’re so inclined, a few tipples from our Sipsmith Gin Cocktail Menu!

6. Step into a storybook at the Beatrix Potter Attraction

Whether you grew up helping Peter Rabbit escape from Mr McGregor, or read the books to your children, you’ll love the World of Beatrix Potter, one of the most famous Lake District attractions. Here, you can step into the magical world that Beatrix created, and may even encounter some familiar faces along the way.

7. Watch a movie under the stars.

What better way to unwind after an adventure-filled day than with a movie night? How about a movie night under the stars? This August, the Outdoor Picture Palace is pulling up by the Windermere Jetty Museum, streaming top-tier movies such as Grease and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Don’t forget your popcorn!

After all that excitement head back to The Swan hotel to snuggle in one of our warm rooms, or even come back and do a spot of your own stargazing!

8. Explore local markets.

There are hundreds of different markets to explore in the Lake District, where you can sample a range of local produce from cheese to wine (and then more cheese again). Alternatively, you could buy some handmade products to commemorate your trip!

Ulverston Outdoor Market, every Thursday and Saturday.

Ulverston Indoor Market, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

9. Captain your own boat

Aye, Aye Captain! When the weather is on your side, why not take to the water and captain your own boat? A fun day for the whole family, just round the corner from The Swan, you can take in the beautiful panoramic views from the lake itself, or even take a dip in the water. 10. Visit Holker House

Holker House is the perfect destination for those looking to participate in some educational activities in the Lake District, as it allows you to step back into history! The house dates back to the early sixteenth century, meaning there are plenty of secrets to uncover as you explore the home and gardens!

Don’t forget to say hello!

No matter what activities you have planned for the summer, we’d love for you to stop by! We have a range of luxury rooms on offer, whether you’re travelling as a couple or the whole family is coming along.
